Johannes Conradi Pfeffer was born 25 MAR 1804 at Ruelkirchen, Hessen. According to Meyer's Gazeteer (www.meyersgaz.org), Ruelkirchen's kreis (county) is Alsfeld, its province is Oberhessen, and its Bezirkskommando is Giessen. His parents were Joannes (John) George Pfeffer (B 12 Sep 1780, D 16 Aug 1841) and Maria Anna Kreuter (B 8 Feb 1773, D 28 Jan 1839) taken from LDS Film #0939229--#0939230 -- Germany, Hesse, Cassel, Ruhlkirchen church records. He was baptized by Father G. T. Zoeller, pastor. These records were verified by Roman Pfeffer along with records at Jasper, Indiana.

On 28 AUG 1837 Joannes Conradi Pfeffer married Margaretha Scheurich in Jefferson County, KY.

Johannes came to America about 1828. He first worked at a lumber yard in Louisville, Kentucky for a number of years before marrying a girl who had immigrated from Bavaria. Johannes was a member of the Carl Shurtz group who led a revolution against the German government. It was unsuccessful and he and others had to get out of Germany via France as quickly as possible. Apparently, the revolutionists went to the border on a series of fast horses. How long they were in France is unknown but when they left France, it took them a total of nine weeks to sail to the United States of America.
