Civil war Union Army Officer. He was first commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company E, 74th New York Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861. After spending time as Ordnance officer on the staff of Major General Joseph Hooker, he was promoted to Captain on June 23, 1862. He was appointed Major of the regiment on July 20, 1862, but the appointment was revoked on November 1, 1862 before he could be mustered into the rank. On February 4, 1863 he was transferred to the 145th New York Volunteer Infantry and commissioned its Colonel and commander. Wounded slightly on May 2, 1863 during the Battle of Chancellorsville, he led his men until he was court martialed and dismissed from the service on December 9, 1863 for a number of charges that included violation of orders and neglect of duty.
