Mary's gravestone is engraved "1856 - 1911" It was suggested that Mary was born December 9 1855 in Orange Vermont. This conflicts with other sources which state she was born in Burlington.

Mary attended private schools in Burlington before studying music in Germany. On November 6, 1878, she married Horatio Loomis. The coupled lived in London, then in New York City. After Horatio passed away, Mary moved back to Burlington, and lived in her family's home on Willard Street.

From the obituary in the Burlington Weekly Free Press April 20, 1911: "Kind and charitable in nature, she did much good in a quiet, unostentatious way."
