Gwendolyn M. Drew (Smith), age 99, of Grand Rapids died Sunday, January 28, 2012. She was born on May 27, 1912.

Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac Johnson and Daisy A. Sims; husbands, Richard T. Drew and Lewis R. Smith.

She is survived by her son, Stephen (Clarice) and 5 grandchildren.

Gwen was retired from her jobs at South Middle School, Herpolsheimers Department Store and Dr. Cortez English DDS, one of the first African American Dentist in Grand Rapids.

Gwen was a social magnet, known for her love of friends, parties and simple gatherings. She was the spiritual lifeline of the Argentines, a card playing social club shared with her "best friends" for food, drink and laughter. Her greatest joy was her beloved son Stephen, her five grandchildren and seeing the Boston Celtics win. As a lifelong member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, she was involved in every aspect of its growth and development, from the altar guild, to Sunday School, sitting every Sunday in pew number two.

Family night will be held to honor Gwen's life Friday, February 3rd, at Gillespie Moody Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 4th at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, 550 Henry St SE. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John M.
