Originally, the family had the surname of "Anderson", but when his ancestors landed in America, there were so many Scandinavian families who arrived with that surname, they were assigned the new last name of "Dale". Allen was the 10th of 15 children. In 1950, he graduated from Snohomish High School and promptly joined the U.S. Navy. He became a Chief Hospital Corpsman and served in the Korea War and later in 2 tours in Vietnam during that conflict. He retired from the Navy in 1972 and moved to San Francisco. He began a long civilian career as a medical records technician and worked at Mt. Zion and later at San Francisco General Hospital. He was an avid motorcyclist and member of the "Warlocks Motorcycle Club" and served twice as chairman of the Inter-Club Fund. He was active in the "South of Market" community in the 70s and 80s and was a familiar face at most of the "leather bars" and club meetings of the era. He was a long time supporter of the AIDS Emergency Fund. He was survived by his partner of 40 years, Charlie Minehart, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
