The vital record of his birth reads "Willie E.," but a family Bible with entries made around 1883 list his name as William Ernest.

Will moved in 1904 with his parents from their first Chelsea farm to one a mile south of Chelsea village on the Tunbridge road. He farmed with his father and brother Ed for awhile but after his marriage, he briefly moved away to Tunbridge to try it on his own and keep peace between the women at home. When his mother and sister were moved away by Henry, his brother, Will moved back and purchased the farm and this eventually became his son's after him. Will was assigned family group number 500 by Sedgley who said of him:
"He is a farmer, and lives at Forest View Farm, Chelsea, Vermont. His letter heads show that he keeps Suffolk Punch horses, Ayreshire cattle, Shropshire sheep, Berkshire hogs, and White Rock hens."

Children (born Chelsea VT)

ii. Marjorie, b. 15 Oct 1919
iii. Clinton Austin, b. 12 Nov 1921
iv. Thelma, b. 7 Jul 1927
