CREWS George L. Crews, Jr., age 88, of Jacksonville, passed away on October 2, 2014. Born in Crewsville where his family had a citrus farm, he grew up in Wauchula with his 2 brothers and one sister. Eager to see the world, George joined the US Navy during World War II where he served as an aviation mechanic and did shore patrol while stationed in Hawaii. In 1948 he married Gemmel Rizk, whom he met while she was a nurse training for the Nurses Army Corp. Following the war, he attended the University of Florida where he obtained his Bachelor s degree and Master s in Education. He then taught Industrial Arts at Fletcher High School from 1952 to 1961 and Engineering Graphics at Miami-Dade Community College from 1961 until he retired. In 1982, George and his family moved back to Jacksonville where they renovated a 19th century farmhouse and grew Charlie Brown Christmas trees. George loved hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. In fact, he is well-known for sinking several airboats in the Florida Everglades. George was very proud of his five children-(George, Patricia, William, Debra and Timothy) and three grandchildren, (Brian, Jimmy and Erica). George is known and loved by all for his kind and generous nature. A Celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 am, Wed., October 8th at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home located at 940 Cesery Blvd. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
