British Army Field Marshal. His military service ran from 1895 until 1937 and during this time he commanded the Eastern Command, Western Command, 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division, the 3rd Division, the 20th Brigade, the 1/4th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, and served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff (1936 to 1937). He fought in the Fourth Anglo-Ashanti War and World War I and later advised the British Government on the importance of maintaining the capability to mount an Expeditionary Force for operations on mainland Europe. His honors and awards include the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, the Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the French Legion of Honour, and the French Croix de guerre. He died at the age of 72 and was cremated, with his ashes interred at Bournemouth Crematorium and North Cemetery Bournemouth, in Bournemouth, Dorset, England. A cenotaph in his honor was erected in the York Minster Cathedral.
