Chavez, Jose "Joe" L.

Jose "Joe" L. Chavez, age 92, formerly of Manitowoc and currently a resident of Knoxville, TN, died Saturday, October 4, 2014 in Knoxville, TN.

Joe was born on June 22, 1922 in Deming, NM son of the late Pomposo Nava and Maria Hilaria Valverde (Lucero) Chavez. He was a 1940 graduate of Deming High School. Joe served in the United States Navy during WWII from September 4, 1942 until December 13, 1945. On March 11, 1943 Joe was married to Lenore Shirley Brandt in Deming, NM. He worked for the Mirro Company retiring on April 1, 1987. He was a former member of St. James Episcopal Church in Manitowoc. Joe played semi-pro basketball in Manitowoc for the Manitowoc Rockets and the Manitowoc Braves. In 1994 Joe was inducted into the Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame. He enjoyed all sports and was an avid Packer fan.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law: Jose (Suzanne) Chavez, Knoxville, TN; three grandchildren: Justin (Angie) Chavez; Chad Chavez; Charlotte (Lloyd) Lewin; three great grandchildren: Amanda Chavez; Aliza Chavez; Makayla Lewin; one great great grandson: Chandler Chavez; former daughter-in-law: Mary (Fritz) Kistenmacher, Sheboygan; one brother and sister-in-law: Ricardo "Richard" Lucero (Stella) Chavez, El Paso, TX; one sister: Manuela "Nellie" Lucero Chavez Bueno, Norwalk, CA; two sisters-in-law: Rosilyn Pistotnik, Madison; Lois (Captain Gene) Nelson USN Retired, Manitowoc, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother: Porfirio Lucero Chavez; four sisters: Faustina Norero; Hilaria Duran; Carolina Martinez; Dolores Sapien; 7 brothers-in-law and 4 sisters-in-law: James Pistotnik USN Retired; Col. Leo "Bud" Brandt; John (Virginia) Brandt; David Brandt; June (Randolph) Stehn; Althea (Harvey) Lippert; Marilyn (Dr. Arthur) Larson.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2014 at the Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home, 818 State Street, Manitowoc. The Rev. Diane Murray will officiate with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery with full military honors accorded by Drews-Bleser American Legion Post #88 of Manitowoc.
