Harry Leavitt was one of the founders of the Fraternal Order of Eagles International.

On Feb. 6, 1898, in Seattle, Wash., Leavitt and five other theater owners -- John Cort, Mose Goldsmith, Arthur Williams and brothers John W. and Tim J. Considine -- met to discuss a musicians' strike. After deciding what to do about that issue, they formed an organization they originally called "The Order of Good Things." Cort, the organization's first president, later suggested changing the name to "Fraternal Order of Eagles."

The organization was originally made up of men who were involved in one way or another in the performing arts. The Eagles were instrumental in establishing the Mothers Day holiday in the United States, and have raised millions of dollars over the years for various charities. Seven U.S. Presidents have been Eagles -- Teddy Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan.
