Mrs. Byrd was born December 29, 1919, in Huntington, IN, to Clarence R. and Lucile V. (Walter) Showalter. Her parents preceded her in death. Mrs. Byrd married Johnny Maples on November 22, 1941. He preceded her in death on May 4, 1959. Her second marriage was to Nyle D. Byrd in August, 1968. He preceded her in death in April, 1987.
Mrs. Byrd was a 1937 graduate of Huntington High School. She worked at Memcor as a Secretary and retired in 1974. She was a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Huntington, IN and the Rosary Sodality. The Maples family would like to thank the Heritage of Huntington for all the love, care and support they have given Helen the past 10 years.
Surviving is one son, John (Mary) Maples ; son-in-law, Patrick Mettler, sister-in-law, Ethel Maples, brother-in-law, Jim Stoffel, FL; 6 grandchildren, John (Lyn) Mettler, Emily (Arron) Stephans, Bill (Leah) Maples, Johnny (Doris) Maples, Tom (Katie) Maples, and Joe (Shannon Neisus) Maples. She is also survived by 8 great grandchildren and 11 nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and two husbands she was preceded in death by a daughter, Judianne Mettler on September 27, 2012; one sister, Eva Lois Speaker; and one brother, Richard C. Showalter.
Calling hours will be Monday, October 13, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 860 Cherry Street, Huntington, IN.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the calling at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2014, at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 860 Cherry Street, Huntington IN, with Father Glenn O’Connor presiding.
Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
