PRESIDENT OF YALE 1817 - 1846

Jeremiah Day, son of Rev. Jeremiah Day (Yale 1756) and Abigail Noble (widow of Rev. Silvans Osborn), was born in New Preston, Connecticut, on August 3, 1773. He entered Yale College in 1789, but was absent for 2 years in the middle of the course due to ill health. He graduated in 1795. After leaving college, he took charge of the Academy at Greenfield for a year, In 1796 he was elected tutor in Williams College, and after 2 years served a similar position at Yale. During his tutorship, he studied theology and was licensed to preach by the New Haven West Association in 1800. He spent the winter of 1801 in Bermuda because of his failing health. He received the degree of LL.D. from Williams and Middleburg Colleges in 1817, and of D. D. from Union in 1818. On the death of Dr. Dwight in 1817, he was chosen President of Yale College, and held this office for 29 years. He resigned in 1846 at the age of 73. He continued to serve as a member of the Yale Corporation for another 20 years, retiring from the Board a year before his death.

He married Martha Sherman, daughter of Hon. Roger Sherman, in January 1805. She died in 1806, and on September 24, 1811, he married Miss Olivia Jones of Hartford. He was survived by only one son, Sherman Day (Yale 1826), by his first marriage.
