youngest of a family of nine

His sister Elizabeth, who also lived for many years in Bellevue, took charge of the family, and did all a mother could have done in bringing him up. She was best known as "Aunt Elizabeth Harkness", and lived many years on Centre street, near the old Methodist church, where she managed alone her little domestic affaris, the friend of all, and loved by all who knew her. She never married, and was thus enabled to give time and care to the assitance of others, amid the sorrows and trials of domestic life. She was a lady of superior intelligence, educated and refined. She lived to be some eighty-five
years of age and died at the residence of her brother in the year 1864.
