Cecil Claymon Grimes, Jr., a long-term resident of Georgetown, departed this life peacefully in the company of his loving family on October 8, 2014.

Mr. Grimes was born in Greenville, MS, on July 23, 1922, the son of Cecil Claymon Grimes, Sr., and Sadie Ehlers Grimes.

He was predeceased only days earlier by his loving wife, Harriet Horry Pyatt Grimes, after just recently celebrating their 67th wedding anniversary on October 4th .

Surviving are his two sons, Cecil Claymon "Bubba" Grimes, III, and John Pyatt "Jack" Grimes (Norma), and his daughter, Harriet "Happy" Grimes Wilcox (Norman), all of Georgetown, as well as six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of South Carolina, and after moving to Georgetown in 1947, practiced law until his retirement.

His many accomplishments include serving in World War II as a fighter pilot, where he flew 24 missions over Japan in P-51 fighters escorting B-29 bombers. He was an active participant in state government, serving as a member of the SC State House of Representatives from 1959 until 1962 and the SC State Senate from 1962 until 1972. He was a proud member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans; belonged to the Georgetown Rotary Club, the Coastal Council, and the Georgetown Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees; and acted as a director for First Federal Bank of Georgetown and Carolina First Bank. He also served as member and past president of Winyah Indigo Society and the South Carolina Historical Society.

He was a faithful communicant of Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry and as Junior and Senior Warden and was instrumental in creating The Preservation Trust for Historic Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church.

Memorial services will be held at eleven o'clock on Saturday morning, October 11, 2014, at Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church. Officiating will be The Very Reverend Paul C. Fuener. Inurnment will follow in the Churchyard.

A reception will be held immediately following the service at the Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church Parish Hall.
