Thomas A. Gable, 81, of Connersville, died Friday evening, February 29, 2008 at his home. He had been in failing health for the past 18 months.

He was born December 6, 1926 in Indianapolis, IN one of five children of Ralph and Nellie Huffman Gable.

In 1945, he graduated from Indianapolis Shortridge High School where he played football, basketball and ran track. He entered the U.S. Army in 1945 and served until his honorable discharge in 1947. He graduated from Western New Mexico University in 1951 where he played basketball and lettered in track and tennis. In 1996, he was inducted into the Western New Mexico University Athletic Hall of Fame.

On July 17, 1953, he was married in Indianapolis to Geraldine Hale. Mrs. Gable survives.

He started his teaching and coaching career in 1954 and had taught and coached at Pekin High School, and also at Martinsville, Monrovia and Monroe Central.

He earned his Master of Science Degree from Indiana University in 1962 and he and his family moved to Connersville in 1964 and he started his teaching and coaching career here. He coached both football and basketball, but was primarily known as Head Baseball Coach at CHS. He won 11 sectional titles, 4 regional championships, 1 semi-state runner up and 4 South Central Conference championships. The Spartans finished the 1976 season ranked 4th in the state. Tom retired with a winning percentage of .682 in 1987 and continued to teach for three more years, retiring in 1990. In 2000, he was inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame.

He was a member of Central Christian Church where he served as an elder. A member of the Connersville Kiwanis Club since 1990, he was awarded Kiwanian of the Year in 2002, Best Darn Ticket Seller in 2005-06 and given the Eagle Award for service above and beyond in 2006-07.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, Thomas J. Gable and wife Kristine; and a daughter, Patty Bostwick and husband Dan, all of Connersville; seven grandchildren, Conner, Chandler and Cayler Gable, and Austin and Tori Bostwick, all of Connersville, and Kent Gable and Jennifer Felts both of Lafayette, Louisiana; and two great grandsons and a daughter in law, Jo Lynne Gable, also of Lafayette; a niece, Linda Clarke, and a nephew, Larry Clarke. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Gable, two sons, Matthew and Timothy Gable, three brothers, Bob, George and Howard Gable; and a sister, Kathleen.

Funeral services will be conducted by Dr. Richard Moore at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008 in Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home, where friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial, with military rites conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council, will be in Dale Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Connersville Kiwanis Club or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
