Dorothy (Couture) Shampine passed away peacefully on October 6, 2014 at Hospice House in Cheboygan. Dorothy was born on April 19, 1915 to Zephyr and Emily (Charboneau) Couture here in Cheboygan. Her only surviving brother, Willis (Berniece) Couture resides in Darlington, NC. She married Francis Shampine on September 13, 1933 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Mackinaw City. Together they raised 14 children and those children produced 29 grand children, 40 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren. Dorothy loved playing cribbage and at age 94 she had her first perfect cribbage hand. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and the Detroit Tigers. Francis preceded her in death on December 16, 2000 as well as sons, Thomas on August 26, 2010 and David on January 14, 2000. Also preceding her were son-in-law, Jack Niesen, daughter-in-law, Gloria Shampine, grandchildren, Jeff Sova, Amanda Gobeyn, Tim Fish and great grandson, Michael Ostwald.
She is survived by children NovaLee Niesen, and Lawrence Shampine of Oklahoma, Marlene (Craig) Bongard and Denise (Art) Watts of Florida, Rita (Roger) Gobeyn of New York, Sally Shampine of Indiana and Cheryl Kwiatkoski of Colorado, Richard Shampine, Annette (Bill) Sova, Marcia Shampine, Kim (Bruce) Cook and Peter Shampine all of Cheboygan.
The viewing for family and friends will be at Nordman-Christian Funeral Home on October 12, 2014 from 5 until 8 p.m. including a rosary at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be October 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St Mary’s Catholic Church. Rev. Paul Megge will officiate, burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
