Damon Courtenay is the subject of his father's best selling book, "April Fools Day".

Damon was born with classic haemophilia. This genetic blood disorder means that there is no factor VIII in the blood, which prevents the blood from clotting. Factor VIII transfusions are required to stop the blood from any internal bleeding. It was not uncommon for Damon to undergo several transfusions a week. A bleed is very painful, and Damon would retire to his room and escape from the pain through his love of reading.

Some time before 1985, Damon received some clotting factor which was tainted with the AIDS virus. Eventually, after living HIV positive for a few years, he developed AIDS. Damon battled it very bravely, with his loving and beloved partner Celeste fighting every step of the way alongside him.

Damon was an extremely gutsy young man, who fought the infections that AIDS brings with it with all his might until death finally took him on April Fools Day 1991.

According to Bryce Courtenay's book, Damon never made a fuss concerning his illness, and never complained. The 'Mighty Damon' certainly lived life to the fullest. Rest peacefully, Damon.
