He was the son of Paul David Hastings and Effie Elizabeth (Kersey) Hastings.
On December 1, 1943 S/Sgt Hastings was a gunner on B-24D #42-73055 serving with the 10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group, 9th Bombardment Squadron. They were part of a formation of B-24s on a bombing mission to Insein Burma, near Rangoon. Fierce enemy opposition of anti-aircraft fire and fighter planes was encountered. Hastings's plane, along with four others, was shot down during the air battle.
Hastings and six of his nine crewmates were able to parachute to safety and became prisoners of war. Two of his crewmates died as prisoners. After being held for eighteen months, Hastings was freed when Rangoon was liberated by US and British forces.
He was awarded the Air Medal.
Hastings owned a restaurant and married Vivian June Hastings On December 15 1964.
