James A. Fudge, 62, of Kearney, Neb., formerly of Dubuque, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at the home of his brother, Gerald Fudge, 870 Kelly Lane, following a short bout with cancer. Jim died surrounded by his family.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, with the Rev. Ron Schardt officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Fudge retired from Baldwin Filter Co. in Kearney, in 2004. He formerly worked at Clow Corp., in Oskaloosa, Iowa
He was born on May 12, 1943, in Dubuque, son of Lois (Eudaley) and Carl Fudge.
He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1961. He received his master's degree in Industrial Technology from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1970.
He served with the Army in Korea.
Jim devoted most of his life to Habitat for Humanity, building 30 homes in Kearney and surrounding areas. He participated in the Jimmy Carter Work Projects in Eagle Butte, S.D., Kentucky; Manila, Philippines; South Korea; Vera Cruz, Mexico; Durbin, South Africa; Anniston, Ala.; and Houston. He helped in other building projects in Florida, Rio Grande Valley, Texas, Florence, Miss., and Dubuque. Most recently, Jim spent five months in Slidell, La., rebuilding homes in the aftermath of Katrina when he was taken ill.
On April 11, 2006, Jim was to receive the Humanitarian Award for Volunteerism accorded by the Kearney Hub Newspaper. This award will be accepted posthumously by his family.
Surviving are three sisters, Melba (Frank) Scaglione, of Des Moines, Wanda (Bob) Gibbons, of Dubuque, and Diann (Fran) Woller, of Anchorage, Alaska; three brothers, Gerald (Jeanne) Fudge, of Dubuque, Dwayne (Karen) Fudge, of St. Catherine, Iowa, and Michael Strader, of Graf, Iowa; and a very special nephew, Todd Fudge. Also surviving are 11 other nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.
