August was the son of John Louis and Frederika Regina Geckle Raab. Gus married Anna Myers on Christmas Eve 1908 in Wood County. He worked at a livery stable, as a millwright, and then as a janitor for Sear & Roebuck. August was of medium height and build with brown eyes and dark brown hair. In 1900, he was living with his cousin John Layman and his wife Caroline. At the age of 50 years 7 months and 21 days, August died from myocarditis. He belonged to the Modern Woodsmen of America.
