Benjamin enlisted in the Confederate States Army at Brookhaven, Mississippi on 4 January 1863 and served as a private in Company G, 6th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. His service was curtailed by illness, and he was reported to be home sick the following April.
Benjamin appears on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses for Copiah County, Mississippi, being in the community of Rockport in 1880. Since he was "on a farm' in all three censuses, one can conclude that he was a farmer. His second wife had died by 1880.
