Mrs. L. Virginia (Ponton) Smith, 87, of Keedysville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, October 12, 2014 at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Maryland, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on November 28, 1926, in Nestle, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Harry Edward and Susie Americus (Barrett) Ponton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry "Red" E. Smith, Jr., on May 9, 2009.

Virginia was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Keedysville for over fifty years and taught Sunday School in the children's department for forty years. Her dedication to the church included: helping to make Easter eggs to sell for the Luther League and later on in years for the youth group and youth choir gowns. She was well known for her pies and soups she made yearly for the Easter and Christmas Bazaar. She kept attendance records for the Sunday School Department and was responsible for getting perfect attendance pins and certificates for church members. She also started a memorial flower garden at the church and was dedicated in maintaining this. She served on the church council and was also instrumental in organizing the 125th anniversary of the church and getting the historical book together. Virginia also gave her time to help with the South County Food bank and helping to prepare meals for the REACH Shelter.

In her early working career, Virginia worked for the Hagerstown Rubber Company for twenty years. Following her work at the rubber company, she became a lunch aide at Boonsboro Middle School, where she worked for twenty-nine years.

Virginia enjoyed working in her flower garden, reading, traveling, crocheting, bowling, ceramics, baking pies, and volunteering with the Boonsboro Ambulance and Rescue Service, Inc. She enjoyed researching family genealogy and the history of her hometown of Keedysville. She was an active school supporter when her daughter was cheerleader and nephew played football for Boonsboro High School in the late 1960's and early '70's. Later, when her second daughter and granddaughter were at Boonsboro High School, she was active as a band booster parent and grandparent. Virginia was also an avid supporter of the Williamsport High School Band, as her two great-grandchildren were both members. She and her husband thoroughly enjoyed watching their grandson, James, play baseball for Martinsburg High School. Virginia loved to spend time with her daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her great-great grandson.

She is survived by her two loving daughters, Deborah Sue Painter of Hagerstown, Maryland and Robyn Elizabeth Ford and her husband, James of Boonsboro; three grandchildren, Stacey Sue Hambleton and husband, Ronnie, Sr. of Hagerstown, Lewis Jacob Painter, Jr. of Martinsburg, West Virginia and James Edward Painter and his wife, Tracy, of Hedgesville, West Viginia; two great-grandchildren, Ronnie Lee Hambleton, Jr and Brandi Lynn Hambleton, both of Hagerstown; and one great-great grandson, Carter Edward Dean Hambleton of Hagerstown. She is also survived by two sisters, Mary Louise Hamilton and Betty Lee Biser.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Lewis Jacob Painter, Sr.; a great-granddaughter, Angel Noel Hambleton; a sister, Catherine Marie Milburn; her brother, Charles Albert Ponton; her two brother-in-laws, C.
