A second lieutenant, he served in Co. H, 55th Georgia Infantry, a unit that suffered many lost, wounded or captured at Cumberland Gap. With a few remaining soldiers he was then assigned the sad duty to serve as a guard at Andersonville Prison; he left no further record after Oct 1864, when he probably went home to his wife and babies. After the war he worked in a carriage shop in Cuthbert, Ga. He, his wife and a number of his children all died fairly young.
