Funeral rites were held Saturday afternoon from Dixon Chapel near Fort Ritner, for eighty-seven-year-old Sherman Umphress who died late Wednesday at the home of a son, George Umphress, Medora,R1, where he had lived for more than a year.

Mr. Umphress, a blacksmith by trade, was born in Lawrence County on March 19, 1866, son of the late Stephan and Samantha McKeigg Umphress. In 1894 he was married to Emma Speer, of Leesville. Mrs. Umphress died in 1948.

Mr. Umphress was a member of the Methodist Church at Fort Ritner and was well known throughout the community.

Seven sons survive. They are Ernie, Harley, Opal and Paul Umphress all of Bedford; Ray and Emory Umphress of Heltonville, R1 and George Umphress, Medora, R1. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Sarah Lee of Stanford, Illinois, 28 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Two daughters preceded him in death.

Note: Thomas's first wife was Oatie/Ottia May Faris/Farris. They were married November 27, 1890. She was born September 13, 1873 and died March 8, 1893 at age 19. Family history has her as being buried at Dixon Chapel/Proctor Cemetery, Guthrie twp, Lawrence County, Indiana although a stone hasn't been found for her there as yet.
