MUSCATINE, Iowa – Velma E. Shafer, 94, of Muscatine, died on Sunday, May 8, 2011, at Trinity Hospital – Muscatine.

Funeral Service will be 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Reverend Jerry Phillips of the Bloomington-Muscatine Friends Church will officiate the service. Casket bearers will be Kenneth Bierman, Kevin Curry, Larry Brennan, Gary Christiansen, Lynn Christiansen, and Kacy Curry. Burial will take place in Nichols Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Bloomington-Muscatine Friends Church or the Muscatine Humane Society.

Velma was born on August 14, 1916, in Muscatine, the daughter of George and Martha Welk Bierman. She married Mervin C. Shafer on June 6, 1937, in Muscatine. He preceded her in death on March 22, 2001.

She was a graduate of Muscatine High School, class of 1935.

For 18 years, she and her husband were partners in a grocery and general store in Nichols. She also worked as Personal Supervisor for F. W. Woolworths for 12 years. She and her husband owned and operated the Dairy Barn restaurant in Muscatine. She also had worked with the school lunch program.

She was a life member of the Bloomington-Muscatine Friends Church.

After retiring, she and her husband enjoyed traveling in a V.W. camper van through the United States, Canada, Alaska, and Mexico. They also took a trip to Costa Rica.

Those left to honor her memory include a sister, Dorothy Gilleland and husband, Don, of Muscatine; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Ralph, Raymond, and Charley Bierman; and one sister, Viola Garnes.
