Martha was 7th of 9 children to Dr William W. Kent, veterinary doctor and Hannah Lewis. Martha listed in the 1860 census as 6/12 old on 27 June when it was taken. She grew up on the Green Twp. farm.

Martha and Isaac Vale were married in 1880 and resided in Smithfield for the 1880 Ohio Census before the children were born. Martha is listed at 20 years old as a "housekeeper". The 1880 Census also reports both her parents were born in Ohio. Family oral tradition has Martha and Isaac living their whole life on the Smithfield farm, making it likely that all of their 9 children were born there.

There exists (as posted) a wonderful picture dated around 1900 of the family on the farm though the two oldest boys are not pictured and the youngest son was not yet born yet. It looked like it was a hard meger existence on the farm.

When Martha was widowed in 1925 she left the farm. Martha lived with daughters "Hazel" and "Pauline" in Weirton, WV. In the 1930 census she is listed with daughter Pauline Hair's family at the age of 70 in Cross Creek, Brooke Co., WV. It is in the Hair home where her family said she died. Her death certificate confirms her parents were "W.(H). Kent" and "Hannah.Lewis" and that she was born in Harrison Co., Ohio.
