David J. Bates, 71, of Connersville went home to be with the Lord Tuesday afternoon, August 24, 2010 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Dayton, Ohio, where he had been a patient for the past week.

He was born July 22, 1939 in Orange Township in Fayette County, Indiana, one of ten children of Walter Stanley and Essie L., Royster Bates. He attended the Connersville Schools.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, upon completing his military service he was honorably discharged and returned to Connersville for residence.

On March 5, 1958 he was married in Connersville to Barbara S. Collins of Rushville, Indiana. Together they raised three daughters: Tina, Debbie and Pamela.

David was a skilled plasterer and had been formerly employed with Oliver Huber Construction. He had also worked in the assembly department at National Metal in Connersville and had been a ground maintenance manager for Liberty Tree Campground. Most recently he had worked at Stant Manufacturing for seven years before he retired.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge.

An avid outdoors man, he loved to fish, especially at Indian Lakes in Batesville. Other outdoor activities included hunting and he was a skilled woodworker. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Barbara S. Bates of Connersville; three daughters: Tina M. Butcher and husband Rick of Batesville, Debbie Stanley and husband Earl of Camden, Ohio and Pamela L. Parrish and companion, Mike Conner of Connersville; six grandchildren: Jeremy Butcher, Amanda Rose, Nathan Bates, Ashley Parrish, Elizabeth Stanley and Clara Stanley; three great-grandchildren: Katie Rose, Jack Rose and Wade Rose; his mother, Essie Bates of Connersville; siblings: Jay Bates of Lebanon, Ohio, Linda Hobbs, Jerry Bates, Darryl Bates and Judy May, all of Connersville; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his father, Walter Bates; two grandchildren: Little Doug Mehl and Cory Butcher; a sister, Gladys Barlow; and three infant brothers.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 PM Friday, August 27, 2010 at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home with Reverend James T. Luoma, Chaplain at the Dayton Veteran's Administration Medical Center officiating. Burial will be in Orange Cemetery, with military rites provided by the Fayette County Veterans Council Honor Guard. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 AM until the time of services on Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made in care of the funeral home to the Dayton Veteran's Administration Medical Center.
