Long-time Page resident (over 40 years - 1970-2013), Raymond Dee "Ray" Hickman, 84, died on March 14, 2013. Ray was born July 8, 1928, in Overton, Nevada, to Edwin Dee and Vivian (Perkins) Hickman. On Dec. 26, 1947, he married Patricia Lula Bailey. They were the parents of eight children.
Ray served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948 on the U.S.S. Juneau as a signal and radio man. He received a bachelor of science after majoring in commercial art from Woodbury College in 1950.
After graduation, he managed a gas station for many years and then went on to work for Vostron Electronics. In 1970, he moved to Page. His longest employment was with Page Steel, working for his good friend Harvey Gardner, until his retirement.
Ray served on the Page City Council from 1977 to 1980.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings including the stake high council and bishoprics.
Ray had a great love for high school sports and was a devoted fan of the Page High teams. He was a former sportswriter for the Lake Powell Chronicle and announced many of the games and track meets.
Ray was a talented artist and many of his paintings of local scenery and Navajo culture are displayed around town. His favorite subject to paint was WWII aircraft and can be seen on the Facebook pages of Ray Hickman Aviation and Western Art.
Ray will be remembered by his many friends for his fun-loving antics, kindness and generosity, especially the children who knew there was always a piece of candy for them in his pocket.
He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia and great-grandson Kaleb Anthony (Hutchings) Williams, parents and seven siblings.
He is survived by his eight children: Michael (Mindy) Hickman, Karen (Samuel) Bush, Laura (Leslie) Dupaix, Grant (Anna) Hickman, Richard Hickman, Merry (Patrick) McGuire, Melody (Daniel) Adams, James (LaDonna) Hickman, 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews who all loved him and will miss him.
The family would like to sincerely thank everyone for their kindness and help at this time.
