The youngest child and only daughter of Roy Hill and Rosa Lee Smith, "Frances" was born in Joplin, Missouri. The family moved to Madison County, Illinois in the 1920's.

Frances married Thomas W. "Tom" Johnson on 29 Jun 1941 at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri. They were the parents of 2 children.

Tom made a career of the United States Air Force. The family traveled around the world during his 22 years in the military. After he retired, they settled in South Roxana, Madison County, Illinois to be near Frances' parents. He worked as a bus driver for the Roxana School District.

In 1959, Frances began working for the Roxana School District. She loved the people and the various positions she held, but retired in 1978 in order to travel with her husband, Tom.

Frances delighted in spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her hobbies included rooting for the St. Louis baseball Cardinals and watching her favorite show, "Dancing with the Stars." An animal lover, she enjoyed spoiling her favorite dog, Sugar.

At the time of her death at St. Anthony's Hospital, Frances was 92 years, 5 months and 23 days old. She was survived by 1 daughter and son-in-law of South Roxana; 1 son and daughter-in-law of Roxana, Illinois; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and a very special cousin, Barb Lynn, of Wood River, Illinois.

In addition to her parents, Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; 1 granddaughter, Victoria Francine "Tori" Johnson; and 2 brothers, Thomas "Bus" Hill and Leroy "Jack" Hill.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. on 15 Oct 2014 at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River, Illinois. Funeral services were conducted there at 10 a.m. the following morning.

Frances was buried next to her husband, Tom, who passed away in 1993.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to St. Anthony's Hospital or to the American Cancer Society Relay For Life Riverbend.
