Elma Mae (Avery) Brooks, the oldest of seven children of Charles Emery Avery and Ruby Nina (Metz) Avery, was born on her parent's farm near Petersburg, Nebraska on August 5, 1918. Elma attended country schools in the Albion, St. Edward, and Petersburg, Nebraska areas. During World War II, Elma worked at the ordinance plant in Grand Island, Nebraska.
Elma married Thomas Brooks in 1946. They were later divorced, and in 1950 Elma and her three children moved to Columbus, Nebraska. Elma began working at Dale Electronics where she proudly contributed to the space programs through assembly line work at the company. She remained a faithful employee and retired in 1980.
Elma enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping, quilting, being a soccer grandma and watching her grandchildren grow up. She also enjoyed reading, Cubs baseball and watching nature TV.
Elma lived in LaVista, Nebraska; Des Moines, Iowa; Eugene, Oregon; Omaha, Nebraska and Malvern, Iowa. In October 2005, she moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak, Iowa. Elma passed away at the Center on August 17, 2007 at the age of 89 years and 12 days.
Elma was preceded in death by her parents; brother Carl Avery and wife Delores; sister Arleen Luebe; and brother-in-law Pete Howell.
Elma is survived by her children, Joyce, Linda and Larry; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brothers Orville and Jerry; sisters Neoma and Patty; brother-in-law George; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
