He enlisted January 1, 1862 in the 18th South Carolina Volunteers Company G as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was later promoted to 1st Lieutenant. He was wounded and captured by the Union Army at South Mountain, Tenn. He was exchanged on November 8, 1862 at Aikins Virginia. He was listed as wounded and blind November 1863 and retired August 24, 1864.
