Monroe Bailey "Mony" Harden was born 24 June 1937 in Oklahoma City, OK, to Mary and William Henry Harden. As a youngster he delivered newspapers and began collecting stamps, which turned into a lifelong hobby. He was also active in scouting, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Mony graduated from Central High School in Oklahoma City in 1955 and enlisted in the Army with the hope of an appointment to West Point. He won that appointment and attended the USMA Preparatory School before entering the Academy in 1957.

Upon graduation from West Point in 1961, Mony was commissioned in the Artillery and was assigned to Air Defense Artillery units in Texas and Maine (1962-1966), and to the Field Artillery in Vietnam (1967-1968). Following Vietnam, he attended graduate school at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, receiving a Master of Science in mathematics in 1970. He was then assigned to the Mathematics Department at West Point (1970-73).

Following an assignment at the North American Air Defense Command in Colorado (1977-79), Mony retired from the Army and began teaching at Texas Christian University. He continued stamp collecting, exhibiting in multiple stamp expositions and winning numerous medals and awards. He was recognized by other philatelists as an expert in 19th century stamps, in particular the "Banknote Issues" and the "Officials."

Mony passed away on 18 March 2006 with his wife and his four children at his side. He was laid to rest with full military honors at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. His plaque bears the three words that sum up the priorities in his life: Duty, Honor, Country.
