Claire W. Gifford

Services for Claire Wesley Gifford, 69, of Pella, who died Jan. 1, 1995 at Pella Community Hospital, were held January 4 at the First Baptist Church. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Interment was in Graceland Cemetery.

Dr. Gary Smith officiated at the services. Music was provided by Kathy Farmer, pianist, Edith Meppelink, organist, Shannon Dykstra, marimba, and Amy Vander Werf, soloist, accompanied by Ross Vander Werf.

Pallbearers were Carl Boar, John Schippers, Charles Vander Ploeg, Raymond Pothoven, Cornie Tromp, and Dr. Kent Van Vark. honorary bearers were Donald Andrews, Bert Bandstra, Dena Bokhoven, Henry Klein, Howard Knulson and Rev. Lester Terlouw.

Mr. Gifford was born Aug. 23, 1925 at Lynnville, the son of Arhuna Tracy and Grace English Wildman Gifford. He was educated at Lynnville where he graduated from high school in 1943.

He served in the Army during World War II during which time he was wounded and received medals of good conduct, the bronze star, and the purple heart at the time of his discharge in 1946.

On Aug. 21, 1947, he married Dorothy Mary Mc Mains at the Little Brown Church at Nashua.

He graduated from Central College in 1950 with a B.A. Degree. He was employed by Pella Implement store as an accountant for 11 years. In 1961, he became an employee of Pella National Bank. He was employed at the bank for 26 years, retiring in 1987 as the executive vice-president.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he had served as church treasurer for 35 years, on the church pastoral relations committee, advisory council and as a trustee. He had served on the Christian Benevolent Association Board for 2O years; had served as chairman of the Pella Recreation Board; had served on the American Legion Board; and on the Pella Memorial Board, where he had also served as treasurer. He was a member of the "C" Club and had been a member of the Pella Rotary Club from which he received the Paul Harris Award and plaque. He had been a Little League manager for 13 years and most recently had served on the Pella Community Foundation Board. He was the first treasurer and encourager of Hospice when it began 10 years ago. He was a member of the Van Veen-Van Hemert American Legion Post No 89, the V.F.W. and the D.A.V. Following retirement he was a member of the Iowa Horseshoe Pitching Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five half-brothers, Wayne, Keith, Hoyt and Dale Wildman, and Ward Gifford.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Mark (Mary Beth) Van Essen of Ottumwa and Mrs. Willis (Cindy) Van Wyk of Pella; and three grandchildren.

Memorials have been established to the Mary Evers Scholarship Fund and Hospice of Pella.
