Laid to Rest
Funeral services for Samuel C. Dowell, who passed away at a local hospital, February 8th, were held this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Hood Mortuary, with Rev. Homer E. Root officiating.
Frank C. Dowell, brother of the deceased, of Mt Harris, Colorado, and sister, Mrs E. S. Kennedy of La Veta, Colorado, arrived in Durango Monday evening to attend the services.
Pall Bearers were, Al Kroeger, J. L. Swartout, Garland Neel,, E. A. Chubb, Harry Norris, and Jim Decker.
Internment was in Greenmount under direction of Hood Mortuary.

SAM DOWELL PASSES AWAY LAST NIGHT
Samuel C. Dowell age 67, well known resident of La Plata County passes away at a local hospital Friday night at 9:00 o'clock, following an extended illness.
The deceased was born in Columbus, Indiana in 1868. In early childhood he moved with his parents to Missouri where he resided until the mining boom in Leadville at which time he entered the mining game and worked in various mines in that district.
He came to La Plata County about 25 years ago, and since that time has been engaged mining in the San Juan Basin and for many years prospected in the Cave Basin and Vallecito districts. Two years ago he opened a very promising prospect on the upper Vallecito.
Several years ago Mr. Dowell established a camp ground on the upper Vallecito which he operated during the tourist season in addition to carrying on his mining activities.
During his long residence in La Plata county he acquired a host of friends in all walks of life.
The deceased is survived by three brothers. Charles F. Dowell of Tulsa, Okla., Frank C. Dowell of Mt. Harris, Ind. and J.C. Dowell of Stillwater, Okla. and one sister Mrs. C.S. Kennedy of La Veta, Colo. who was at the bedside of her brother when he passed away.
Remains have been placed in charge of the Hood Mortuary and funeral arrangements will be anounced later.
