Frances M.J. Pate died in March 1886; her husband Newell W.
Brown died in November 1886. They left 5 children, the youngest being not quite two years old. Apparently the
court posted notices in Van Zandt County, asking anyone
related come forward to care for the children. No one
came! The two oldest boys took off on their own but the
younger ones were parceled out to whoever would take them.
They had a very hard life and one wonders how they ever
