George Washington Varner, III, 87, passed away on Thursday October 23, 2014, in Austin. Graveside services will be at 12 noon, Tuesday, October 28, in White Rock Cemetery under the direction of Bellmead Funeral Home.

George was born in Waco, Texas, to the late George Washington Varner Jr. and Jewel Pauline Varner. Before the war, George attended the Nalley School in Waco. He was a decorated veteran of World War II where he proudly served his nation in the U.S. Coast Guard. After the war, he met and married Evelyn Uptmore in 1947. A longtime employee of General Motors, George retired in 1987 and was finally able to peruse his academic dream of earning a college degree in Theology from Dallas Baptist University. An avid reader, tinkerer, writer, and builder, George inspired those around him with his wood creations, poetry, and religious writings, and entertained with his kind-hearted wit, talent for whistling, and practical jokes on and off the golf course. He was an active member of the Waco Bible Chapel, North Richland Hills Bible Chapel, Garland Bible Chapel. and Austin Bible Chapel.

George was preceded in death by his son, Greg; sister, Ruth; and brothers, Earl, Albert, and Alec.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Evelyn; daughters, Nancy Eubanks and husband, Gary, and Kathy DeLaunay and husband, Loui; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
