Catherine (or Kate) Ann Brown was born on January 23, 1848 in County Cavan in Ireland. Her father's name is currently unknown, and her mother's name was Mary Wiggins. In 1850, Catherine came over to the United States during the potato famine. There appears to be one passenger record that matches making her the daughter of Martin and Mary Brown. They sailed from Liverpool, England on "Lady Sale" and arrived in New York on July 9, 1850. According to 1870 U.S. Censuses, Catherine was a domestic servant for either a Chicago civil engineer named William Wallace Lowe (This is very likely the correct Catherine since her future husband is listed as a neighbor, but she is recorded as 40 years old!) or a Chicago lawyer named John C. Berbella. She married William Henry Durant (a grocer's clerk) on December 24, 1874 in Saint Charles, Kane County, Illinois. They had five children named William Bryant, Edith Kate (Mrs. Thomas Henry Murray), William Walter, Harry Shurtleff, and Evelyn S.(Mrs. Lawrence Ventress Fraley). Catherine died on April 30, 1922 in Oak Park, Cooks County, Illinois.
