The son of George and Phyliis Coey of Columbus, OH, a devout Christian and an Eagle Scout. He attended Ohio State University full time from 1968-1972, graduated with a B S in Forestry in 1972. His anti-communist beliefs lead him to first joint the Marines, then to go to Rhodesia to serve in
that military. According to his Wikipedia entry, he was part of "The Crippled Eagles," American expatriate soldiers fighting for Rhodesia.

Served in the United State Marine Corps, 1970-1972 and in the Rhodesian Army, 1972-1975. He served in the Rhodesian Special Air Service 1972-1974 and in the Rhodesian Army medical Corps attached to the Rhodesian Light Infantry, 1974-1975 during the Rhodesian Bush War. His nickname was :The Fighting Doc." As a medic, he died while trying to save two fellow soldiers in the Kandeya Tribal Lands, Mashonaland, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).

He was first buried in Que Que, Rhodesia, then his remains were re-interred in Columbus, OH. His journals, entitled "A Martyr Speaks" were published by his mother in 1988.
