Luciana Pasini was my grandmother's best friend. I met her when I was a child. She was a very nice lady who could be very outspoken at times but she had a heart of gold. She got her nickname Lucy May from a character in a cartoon. Only we called her that and she liked it and it stuck. It fit.
Luciana was also the person I asked to be my godmother when I had my confirmation at the age of 13. I remember Luciana as a thin and energetic woman, perpetually tanned for going to the beach every day,she would go for long walks along the water every morning. She divided her time between her studio apartment in Rimini and her home in Bologna. She rented the apartment in our beach town year round since she loved it and was happy there especially when her husband Guido Assali died suddenly of a heart attack. She started spending more time in Rimini and that meant we got to spend more time with her. Her little place was just a few minutes from our apartment so we saw her every day. She was part of our little family. She would come over and my grandparents would play cards during hot Summer evenings in our kitchen. I remember hearing their chatter as they played. I liked it because the sound of familiar voices was reassuring. As a child I would be scared to be in my bedroom, the usual monster going to grab my legs sort of fears. They went away as I grew older of course but any chatter when I was going through those fears was a real help to me.
At one point during my childhood she would help her son and watch his German Shepherd, Blue. She brought him to our place a couple times so I could see Blue and join them for some walks. I loved it. It was not every day that I got to see a large dog since we had small dogs and so did most people. I really enjoyed going for walks with Luciana and Blue. He was a very well behaved dog and was such a pretty dog. In our small town especially the regulars at the beach got to become friends so many people knew Luciana. She took care of him when she was back in Bologna too. She was fond of the puppy.
I used to drive her crazy with all my chatter as a child so I am surprised she would go for walks with me at all. She never really told me that I was a chatterbox, not out loud. I found out by accident when I overheard a conversation.
I saw Luciana for the last time on August 14 of 1991. The next day my Mom and I got on a plane and moved to Florida. She was very sad to see us go but would not let us see her get upset. She was a strong lady who I never recall seeing upset or emotional.
Luciana and her husband Guido Assali only had one son, Andrea. Andrea married a lovely lady, Lory and they had two sons, which brought Luciana a lot of joy. She was happy to be a grandmother. I remember the day her first grandson Filippo was born. She was just ecstatic. Her other grandson, Matteo was born a couple years later. She was now the proud doting grandmother of two.
Luciana died in 2004. Sadly her only son, Andrea died of cancer, a short time before she did. She is survived by her grandsons: Filippo and Matteo Assali and her daughter-in-law Lory.
