A lifetime painter, he was also a former member of the Vermilion Heights Methodist Church, and a member of the Painters Union. He fought in WWII in Northern France, the Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and took part in the D-Day invasion at Normandy. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Easter Theater Ribbon with 1 Silver Battle Star, 1 Service Stripe and 3 Overseas Service Bars. He was a member of the Urbana American Legion.
He enjoyed working in the garden and the yard, and was very generous with his time, helping his neighbors whenever he could. He also enjoyed spending time with his sons Jr. and Pete and his grandchildren, Tate, Ami, Melissa and Hollie.
His extended family included a brother Charles and half-brother Harold, 3 sisters - Helen, Ruth and Florence, and 3 half sisters - Betty, Marietta and Dorothy.
