Marlene Grace (Bixby) Troyer, 76, formerly of Waterloo, died peacefully Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Des Moines, where for the past year she has been tenderly comforted.

She was born Jan. 7, 1938, in Waterloo, Iowa, daughter of Carlyle (Cal) Bixby and Dorothy Marie (Pierce) Bixby. She married Ronald Lee Troyer on Jan. 24, 1958, in Nashua, Iowa. They later divorced.

Marlene graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1956, followed by graduation from Gates Business College. She worked many years for Falls Avenue and Sparkle Cleaners, which was co-owned by her parents and her aunt and uncle. She obtained employment at John Deere in 1974, working until retirement until 1998.

As a member of the Trinity Bible Church family in Cedar Falls she was an active volunteer with the military appreciation effort, participated in a mission trip to Russia and supported many other areas of the church. She was a volunteer at the Cedar Falls Theater ticket office and performed as Aunt Bea in one of their productions of "Mayberry Christmas."

She was a gentle spirit, ready with a kind word of encouragement, warm thoughts of empathy or a prayer for everyone she met. Her passion was a family. Even while nurturing four little ones into adulthood as a single parent; she cherished extended family getting together to share an occasion or event. many people could count on her to attend a recital, concert, birthday party or show up with her lawn chair and watch the game.

Marlene is survived by four children; a daughter, Kandi (Dean) Anderson of Urbandale, Iowa; and three sons, Kyle (Janet) Troyer of Des Moines, Iowa, Kent (Nancy) Troyer of Shawnee, Kansas, and Kurt Troyer of Iowa. She was blessed with 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Garry Bixby, of Auburndale, Florida, and Paul (Sue) Bixby of Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Welcoming her to heaven are her parents, a grandson, Brandon Anderson, many treasured relatives and a genealogy gold mine of ancestors she has only known on paper through years of research.
