Major League Baseball Player. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound right-hander was the American League's Rookie of the Year in 1952, but he was involved in an 11-player trade and later an 18-player swap. He appeared briefly with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1950 but came back to win rookie honors with them when he posted a 15-15 record, a 3.31 earned run average for 228 innings and 15 complete games. The following year, 1953, he was 11-20, the losses leading the AL, and his ERA ballooned to 5.51. He was shipped with first basemen Eddie Robinson and Tom Hamilton, third baseman Loren Babe and outfielder Carmen Mauro to the New York Yankees on December 16, 1953 for first basemen Vic Power and Don Bollweg, third baseman Jim Finigan, catcher Al Robertson, outfielder Bill Renna, pitcher John Gray and $25,000. He went 9-7 with a 2.99 ERA for New York in 1954. The Yankees traded him along with outfielder Gene Woodling, pitchers Jim McDonald and Bill Miller, catchers Hal Smith and Gus Triandos, shortstop Willie Miranda, second baseman Don Leppert and third baseman Kal Segrist to the Baltimore Orioles for pitchers Bob Turley, Don Larsen and Mike Blyzka, shortstop Billy Hunter, catcher Darrell Johnson, first baseman Dick Kryhoski, outfielders Jim Fridley and Ted Del Guerico and a player to be named. The transaction was two-fold, starting on November 18, 1954 and being completed on December 3. He was sold to the Chicago White Sox on June 15, 1955. He was on the move again on May 15, 1956, when he, outfielder Bob Kennedy and shortstop Jim Brideweser went to the Detroit Tigers for outfielder Jim Delsing and third baseman Fred Hatfield. His seven-year totals were 46-54, a 4.35 ERA and 33 complete games in 108 starts.
