Capt. H.W. Short, a resident of Nelson for forty years, died January 20th in San Dimas, California, at the age of 90 years.
H.W. Short was born in Leicestershire, England, in 1842. At the age of seven years he came with his parents to America and settled in Illinois, where he grew to manhood and received his schooling. He served in the Civil war (sic) with the First Illinois Light Artillery from December 1863, to July 6, 1865, and participated in twenty-two battles during that time, being with the Fifteenth Army Corps of which Gen. Logan was Commander.
In 1866 he was married to Miss Fannie E. Smelt in Ogle county (sic), Illinois, and they came to Nebraska in 1871, settling in Sanders county (sic). Soon after this they came to Clay county (sic) and homesteaded a quarter section of land, and in 1877 moved to Nelson, where Mr. Short practiced law until he moved to Franklin a number of years ago. He went to California about fifteen years ago, where he continued in his profession until a few years ago when he lost his eye sight.
Mr. Short organized the Alexander Guards of Nelson in 1878 and later he served Company H of the First Nebraska Regiment in the capacity of Captain. He was a charter member of Geo. H. Thomas Post G.A.R.
The deceased is survived by his wife, and six children: Mrs. Mary Keefer, Riverside, California; Henry and Leslie Short, San Dimas, Calif.; Carroll Short, Los Angeles, Calif.; Ed M. Short, Arapahoe, Nebr.; Ernest Short, Nelson, Nebr.
