Ellen Jeanette "Jan" Drees, 93, Hays, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at St. John's of Hays Assisted Living. She was born Sept. 4, 1916, in Miltonvale to George Frank and Anna (Burbank) Boalen.

She married Joseph G. Drees on April 24, 1946, in Hays. He preceded her in death May
5, 1974.

She was a registered nurse. She was a member of Kansas Nursing Association and American Nursing Association, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, an Associate of Sisters of St. Agnes, To Jesus Through Mary Prayer Group, American Red Cross, of which she was head of the volunteers, Hays Medical Center Auxiliary, Perpetual Adorers, St. John's of Hays Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Cancer Council of Ellis County.

Survivors include two sons, Tom Drees and wife, Sharon, Hays, and Charles Drees and wife, Pam Lathrop, Manhattan; a daughter, Mary Ellen Abbott and husband, Denis, Baton Rouge, La.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, James and John Boalen; and two sisters, Louise Boalen and Ruth Boalen Kosar.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 30 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. Friends can call from 4 to 8 p.m. Dec. 29 and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Dec. 30, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. A combined Associates of Sisters of St. Agnes prayer service and a "To Jesus Through Mary" Rosary service will be at 4 p.m. Dec. 29, followed by a Perpetual Adorers rosary at 4:30 p.m., a combined VFW Auxiliary and St. John's of Hays Auxiliary service at 5:30 p.m., a Daughters of Isabella rosary at 6 p.m. and a vigil at 6:30 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Thomas More Prep- Marian High School, 1701 Hall, Hays, KS 67601, in care of the funeral home.
