Effie M (Crowley) Ames, 90, of Jewett St, who had been active in church and civic groups, died yesterday at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
Born in Southampton, June 17, 1894, she was the daughter of the late William H and Alida (Frary) Crowley.
She had lived in Northampton since the age of 3. Mrs Ames joined the Edwards Church in 1912 and was active in the church for many years.
Anna H McDonnell, of 57 Pine St in Florence, graduated from the Northampton High School with Mrs Ames in 1914 and later they were both members of the Northampton Women's Club.
"She was always a very happy person, an inspiration to anyone she knew. She was very interested in life in general," said Miss McDonnell. "She was always very much of a leader in the different groups she belonged to and everyone depended on her. She was a very reliable person. She'll be missed by many of the Northampton women who knew her well."
She was also a member of the Betty Allen Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was the widow of Harold L Ames, a vice-president of the former First National Bank, now the Bank of New England-Hampshire County. He died in 1962.
She leaves four sons, Frederick O., William C., Richard P., and Roger L; three daughters, Hazel E., Mary E., and Shirley J; 20 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Edwards Church.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Bridge Street Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Edwards Church Memorial Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice.
The Pease Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
