Alice D. Bailey Aug. 19, 1924 - Oct. 25, 2014 NILES - Alice D. Bailey, age 90 years, of Alabaster, Alabama, formerly of Niles, Michigan, died at 11:40 a.m. Saturday, October 25, 2014, at the Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, Alabama, following a recent illness. Born in South Bend, Indiana, on August 19, 1924, to Catherine Grace (Leahy) and Edward Downey, she had lived in Niles and Columbus, Ohio, before moving to Alabama in 1993. While living in Niles, she was a member of Saint Mary Catholic Church. Alice retired in 1987 from the J.C. Penney catalog distribution center in Columbus, Ohio, where she worked as a secretary. She was also previously employed by the Bendix Corporation from 1942-1958 and Nissan Packing Company from 1968-1972. She was a member of Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Montevallo, Alabama. On August 21, 1948, in South Bend, Indiana, she married Roy Harold Bailey, who preceded her in death on April 14, 2000. Also preceding her in death were her three sisters: Julia (Downey) Frazier of South Bend, Indiana, Kathleen (Downey) Lewis of San Diego, California, and Mary Ann Downey of Columbiana, Alabama. Alice is survived by a son, James E. Bailey, and daughter-in-law, Catherine Bailey of Alabaster; and by three grandchildren: Clarisse, Brian and Serena Bailey, all of Alabaster, Alabama. The Mass of Christian Burial for Alice D. Bailey will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 31, 2014, at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Niles, by the Rev. Alphonse Savarimuthu, MSFS, of the parish. Committal Rites will follow at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, Indiana. The family will receive relatives and friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. today, October 30, 2014, at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles, with recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Contributions in memory of Alice may be made to the Christian Service Center, 322 Clay Street, Niles, Michigan 49120. www.halbritterfunerals.com
