Al was born on April 5, 1931 in Manitowoc to the late Albert and Anita (LeMarche) Leu. He graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1949. Following his graduation, Al enlisted with the United States Army. He served at Fort Belvoir, VA from 1949 to 1952. Following his honorable discharge, Al returned to Manitowoc and first worked for Manitowoc Engineering and then worked for the Manitowoc Post Office as a postal clerk for 30 years until his retirement in 1986.

On May 5, 1962, he married his wife. Al enjoyed spending his time working in his vegetable gardens, riding his bicycle, woodworking, and assembling jig saw puzzles. Above all, Al cherished the time he was able to spend with his family and was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served as head usher and held several other church and school positions.
