Mr. Thomas Baxter "George" Bowen, 83, of Charlotte, died Monday, January 6, 2003 at Presbyterian "Main" Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel with the Rev. Ron Helms officiating. Interment will follow at Charlotte Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Bowen was born November 9, 1919, the son of the late Annie Bartlett Bowen and Fletcher Lee Bowen. He is survived by his caringwife of 62 years, Jessie McKinney "Jakie" Bowen; three children, Georgia Davis and her husband, Bob, Sandy Bowen Baumgarten, all of Charlotte, Sally Roberts of Low Gap, NC; six grandchildren, one of whom was raised in George and Jakie's home, Joni Fincher; nine great grandchildren; twin brother, James Dexter "Sonnie" Bowen and his wife, Dorothy; and many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved. George was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Howard Bowen and three sisters, Letha Arant, Amylee Durham and Nellie Allison.
Mr. Bowen welded on cargo ships in Wilmington, NC during World War II and was a pipe welder and steamfitter out of Local 96 for 45 years. He will be missed by many.
