"CORRY'S MAYOR IS KILLED IN AN AUTO CRASH - Cassius L Alexander Fatally Injured Near Dunkirk, NY, Last Evening - Enroute To Buffalo Driving His Own Car - Lived Only Few Minutes After Being Taken From Wreckage - Frequently Visited in Titusville - Corry, June 9 - Hon Cassius L Alexander, 58, four times mayor of Corry, former member of the state legislature and engaged in the undertaking business in this city all of his active life, was fatally injured at about 6:30 this evening, when the 12-cylinder Cadillac car which he was driving at a high rate of speed, left the highway about four miles from Dunkirk, NY, and crashed into a telephone pole. Mr Alexander was terribly crushed and lived only about fifteen minutes after being taken from the wreckage by passing motorists. He was able to speak only a few words. With Alexander were Ralph Foster and Harold Paxter, both about 18 years of age and living in Cleveland, O. Both were seriously injured and taken to the Dunkirk hospital. The Cleveland youths stated they were hitchhiking and were picked up by Mayor Alexander, who was enroute to Buffalo, NY, on business. Mr Alexander left Corry late this afternoon and was alone when he started, expecting to return late tonight or early tomorrow. While he was known to be a fast driver, he never had had a serious accident before, and it is believed that something went wrong with the mechanism of the car, although the machine was so badly damaged it will be difficult to ascertain it if such was the case. The machine struck the telephone pole squarely and was almost split in two parts. Native of Erie County - Cassius L Alexander was born in Wayne township and spent most of his life in this city. As a young man he entered the employ of A R Morgan, Corry undertaker, and later with his brother, D J Alexander, purchased the business, which he had conducted ever since. His brother died two years ago, since which time his partners had been Charles Keating and Mark Fullum. Because of his long service as funeral director in this community, Mayor Alexander enjoyed an unusually wide acquaintance. His popularity may be attested from the fact that he had been elected mayor of the city of Corry four times, and had also served the third assembly district in the state legislature. He served in the old Common Council a number of years prior to becoming mayor, serving two terms as mayor prior to going to the legislature. He was defeated for election as mayor by O W Bracken six years ago but following Mayor Bracken's term, Mr Alexander was elected mayor by a vote of about 4 to 1. He had served about 1 1/2 years of his fourth term as mayor. Interested in Civic Affairs - Mayor Alexander was always interested in everything for the betterment of his home city and was serving as head of the community chest this year, giving liberally of his own means and of his time. He was a member of the Masons, the Odd Fellows, the Elks and of Stanford Hose company. Mayor Alexander is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs Sidney Elston of this city, two grandchildren, one sister, Mrs W W Morgaridge of this city and two brothers, Harry Alexander of Corry and John Alexander of Kansas City, Mo. Mayor Alexander was well known in Titusville, where he frequently visited and he was a visitor in the city only a few days ago. He was a man of unusually pleasing personality and made friends wherever he happened to be. There will be general regret among his many acquaintances in Titusville at his tragic death."
