She attended school in Mart, Texas and Business School in Dallas, Texas. She retired from the Federal Government where she had worked for the Soil Conservation Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She was a long-time resident of Albuquerque, a member of the First Presbyterian Church on Locust Street and a member of the ladies' Pilot's Club in Albuquerque.

Preceded in death in 1986 by husband, Joe B. Christy, Mary was a beloved aunt to her nieces and was the daughter of Oscar Bernard Wood and Annie Laura Harthcock Wood, both buried in the Mart Cemetery in Mart, Texas. She was the youngest of four children, a sister, Nora Etta Wood McElroy, and two brothers, Floyd Copeland Wood and O B Wood.
